University of Southampton
Please let us know whether you think your university does enough to attract and cater for students from a diverse range of backgrounds?
"The university is somewhat lacking in European students, as well as students from poorer backgrounds. I found it hard to meet other people who didn't come from rich suburbs in London."
"There are lots of nationalities and cultures at the uni and most of the time they are actively doing things. I've been along to a few meetings for the Middle East Society, they are very open and welcoming."
"I think the university does try to attract and support students from a diverse range of backgrounds. I know some of the staff from the international office and I find them very friendly. They keep good contact with lots of international alumni and current students and hold lots of meetings in different countries to promote the university."
"Bursaries are available to those on low incomes."
"There are many different societies for people from different countries. They are very popular and many people make friends through them."
"The uni has good links with China, encouraging lots of students from there. However, other than this, students are mostly middle class and from quite a narrow environment so this could be improved. Most are quite wealthy and from metropolitan areas."
"The uni could do more to attract low-income students, but it's good at attracting international ones."
"There's a good mix of students from across the world and I know that lots of support is set up for different cultural and language help. I am not sure about the help provided for lower-income students though."
"It clearly does because there are a lot of international students. Although, to be honest, most home students will have attended 'decent' schools such as private or grammar schools to get the required grades."
"Slightly more girls than boys at Southampton, which bucks the trend of many other unis."
"As an international student, I can say that the students are very diverse. There are students from all parts of the globe."
"Definitely. People from all diversities are represented and their needs are met in many different ways. There are also societies for every ethnicity and diversity you can think of, which allows like-minded people to come together and to help showcase and enjoy their culture."
"Special grants are available for those from low income backgrounds."
"They have societies for different nationalities and help those who may struggle."
"Multifaith prayer rooms and linguistic support is available for a range of backgrounds."
"They have lately voted for an international students' officer who is planning on creating events for international students. But, so far, I don't think they have done much."
"It does do a lot they held a world awareness week (or something similar) to celebrate and raise awareness of different cultures recently."
"Exchange programmes are always active. Students from the university are able to study for a semester in other universities around the globe and foreign students are always visiting the university to study. The university has global appeal."
