University of Southampton
Please let us know whether you think your university does enough to attract and cater for students from a diverse range of backgrounds?
"No matter who you are or where you come from, the University of Southampton is for you and will welcome you with open arms. There is no discrimination by race, age, gender or anything like that. As long as you are willing to learn, they are willing to teach and help you as best they can. If you come across a problem of any kind, especially one of discrimination, the university will help you sort it out ASAP."
"The Erasmus exchange programmes along with the university's academic and social reputation contributes to this. Support also seems available as I've observed there to be support classes for EFL (English as a foreign language) students as well."
"The uni offers scholarships for students with the highest grades and also grants for those who come from smaller income households. The students' union is also very representative."
"As far as I am aware, the support for students from different backgrounds is very extensive with large campaigns supporting LGBT+ communities and students with severe disabilities."
"There are plenty of societies with themes all across the board from politics to sports to countries and regions of the world to languages and more. Everybody has something here. Muslims can have their Friday prayers and break their fast together during Ramadan on campus. There are Christian services for the various denominations here and more."
"It clearly does because there are a lot of international students. Although, to be honest, most home students will have attended 'decent' schools such as private or grammar schools to get the required grades."
"Slightly more girls than boys at Southampton, which bucks the trend of many other unis."
"As an international student, I can say that the students are very diverse. There are students from all parts of the globe."
"Definitely. People from all diversities are represented and their needs are met in many different ways. There are also societies for every ethnicity and diversity you can think of, which allows like-minded people to come together and to help showcase and enjoy their culture."
"Special grants are available for those from low income backgrounds."
"They have societies for different nationalities and help those who may struggle."
"Multifaith prayer rooms and linguistic support is available for a range of backgrounds."
"They have lately voted for an international students' officer who is planning on creating events for international students. But, so far, I don't think they have done much."
"It does do a lot they held a world awareness week (or something similar) to celebrate and raise awareness of different cultures recently."
"Exchange programmes are always active. Students from the university are able to study for a semester in other universities around the globe and foreign students are always visiting the university to study. The university has global appeal."
