School and College Leaver Programme - Planning
Challenge, Change, Create
We are Laing O'Rourke. We design, manufacture, engineer and build iconic buildings and complex infrastructure projects used by millions of people every day. We're challenging the industry with innovative design and delivery techniques. We're changing the way we work, using the very latest digital tools and platforms. And we're always looking to create structures that will help build a better future for everyone. We are proud to work on some of the most prestigious projects in the UK, from Europe's largest infrastructure programme, Crossrail, to Manchester Airport Terminal 2 expansion, Hinkley Point C and Edinburgh St James shopping complex.
We're looking for bright and committed Planners who will challenge thinking, change the world around us, and help create amazing buildings and infrastructure. On our School and College Leaver programme, your capabilities will be recognised and rewarded. Most importantly, you will be encouraged to continue learning throughout your career. You will be stretched, challenged and supported by a business that views your professional development as a priority. Our programme will give you the practical experience, technical learning and professional development so that you can be part of the some of the most exciting future construction and infrastructure projects globally.
Diverse on-the-job experience will be complemented by an engaging series of learning modules, helping you to build the right blend of personal and professional skills. You will be mentored by experienced leaders, and enjoy strong support from line managers and a large peer group network. We will work closely with you to develop clear career goals and expand your skills.
On completion, you will continue to benefit from ongoing support from our development team and a network of business contacts, as you move into a permanent role within the business.
The world of Planning
Planning is one of the most important parts of construction. Here we focus on all aspects of the project – who does what, the choice of technology, estimating what resources and materials are required, how long parts of the project will take and right through to working with different partners and suppliers. It is a crucial part of any project.
Is this you?
For a career in Planning, you’ve got to be focused both on the detail of a project as well as the overall objective. There’s an element of being able to work through scenarios, schedules and costs, as well as work with different teams to get their input so being a clear communicator is key.
What to study?
Maths and Science are important to becoming a planner, both at GCSE and A level. But you’ll also need good IT, planning and organisational skills.
A five-year programme that combines academic learning with on-the-job training. Successful candidates will complete a fully funded accredited day-release HNC and/or degree in their chosen area of interest while working as a Laing O’Rourke employee. The programme also includes a series of in-house modules, aimed at exposing you to the latest developments in construction and engineering. Your personal and professional growth will be supported throughout the programme using career planning toolkits and tailored development plans. During the programme you will work across a range of businesses and projects, which will offer the breadth and variety to support your career progression and will contribute towards your professional development.
