Laing O’Rourke

School and College Leaver Programme - Procurement

Challenge, Change, Create

We are Laing O'Rourke. We design, manufacture, engineer and build iconic buildings and complex infrastructure projects used by millions of people every day. We're challenging the industry with innovative design and delivery techniques. We're changing the way we work, using the very latest digital tools and platforms. And we're always looking to create structures that will help build a better future for everyone. We are proud to work on some of the most prestigious projects in the UK, from Europe's largest infrastructure programme, Crossrail, to Manchester Airport Terminal 2 expansion, Hinkley Point C and Edinburgh St James shopping complex.

We're looking for bright and committed candidates who will challenge thinking, change the world around us, and help create amazing buildings and infrastructure. On our School and College Leaver programme, your capabilities will be recognised and rewarded. Most importantly, you will be encouraged to continue learning throughout your career. You will be stretched, challenged and supported by a business that views your professional development as a priority. Our programme will give you the practical experience, technical learning and professional development so that you can be part of the some of the most exciting future construction and infrastructure projects globally.

Diverse on-the-job experience will be complemented by an engaging series of learning modules, helping you to build the right blend of personal and professional skills. You will be mentored by experienced leaders, and enjoy strong support from line managers and a large peer group network. We will work closely with you to develop clear career goals and expand your skills.

On completion, you will continue to benefit from ongoing support from our development team and a network of business contacts, as you move into a permanent role within the business.

The world of Procurement

Imagine we are building a £500m project. We have to make sure that we are buying the right materials and bringing in the right partners and subcontractors, to ensure the project is successful. That means really understanding what the project involves, and then identifying and selecting the best supply change. Of course, it’s not just about the lowest price; we have to manage risk by building relationships and delivering ‘best value’. Here you will become skilled in a wide variety of business disciplines including: Negotiation, Risk Management, Stakeholder & Relationship Management, Legal & Contract, Commercial, Finance, Quality Assurance, Planning, Health & Safety Assessment, Environmental Impact and Cultural & Social Responsibility.

Is this you?

You have to be interested in numbers and how we get the best value, of course. But that’s just part of the role. You have to be commercially aware, curious and keen to understand more about trends in national and international markets: a thorough knowledge of our supplier chains; and how these can successfully deliver for us. This will be a really dynamic, satisfying and rewarding career where you will make a real impact in supporting our business in delivering some of the most iconic and technically demanding construction and infrastructure projects in the UK and around the world.

What to study?

We expect GCSE Grade B in Maths and English as well as three A levels at Grades B, C, C, or above.

Training

A five-year programme that combines academic learning with on-the-job training. Successful candidates will complete a fully funded accredited day-release HNC and/or degree in their chosen area of interest while working as a Laing O’Rourke employee. The programme also includes a series of in-house modules, aimed at exposing you to the latest developments in construction and engineering. Your personal and professional growth will be supported throughout the programme using career planning toolkits and tailored development plans. During the programme you will work across a range of businesses and projects, which will offer the breadth and variety to support your career progression and will contribute towards your professional development.
