School and College Leaver Programme - Civil Engineering
Challenge, Change, Create
We are Laing O'Rourke. We design, manufacture, engineer and build iconic buildings and complex infrastructure projects used by millions of people every day. We're challenging the industry with innovative design and delivery techniques. We're changing the way we work, using the very latest digital tools and platforms. And we're always looking to create structures that will help build a better future for everyone. We are proud to work on some of the most prestigious projects in the UK, from Europe's largest infrastructure programme, Crossrail, to Manchester Airport Terminal 2 expansion, Hinkley Point C and Edinburgh St James shopping complex.
We're looking for bright and committed Civil Engineers who will challenge thinking, change the world around us, and help create amazing buildings and infrastructure. On our School and College Leaver programme, your capabilities will be recognised and rewarded. Most importantly, you will be encouraged to continue learning throughout your career. You will be stretched, challenged and supported by a business that views your professional development as a priority. Our programme will give you the practical experience, technical learning and professional development so that you can be part of the some of the most exciting future construction and infrastructure projects globally.
Diverse on-the-job experience will be complemented by an engaging series of learning modules, helping you to build the right blend of personal and professional skills. You will be mentored by experienced leaders, and enjoy strong support from line managers and a large peer group network. We will work closely with you to develop clear career goals and expand your skills.
On completion, you will continue to benefit from ongoing support from our development team and a network of business contacts, as you move into a permanent role within the business.
The world of a Civil Engineer
Civil Engineers help design and construct the world we live in. From the electricity and gas we use to the buildings we live, study and work in. From the roads we drive on to the airports we fly from. We help to shape the world around us, making sure that we handle the planet’s resources sensitively and sustainably.
Is this you?
Civil Engineers are fascinated by structures, design and problem-solving. We get involved in all aspects of a project, including design, problem solving, planning, logistics and project management. So working with others is really important, as is a natural curiosity about how things are built.
What to study?
Maths and Science are important to becoming a Civil Engineer, both at GCSE and A level. But you’ll also need good IT and planning skills.
A five-year programme that combines academic learning with on-the-job training. Successful candidates will complete a fully funded accredited day-release HNC and/or degree in their chosen area of interest while working as a Laing O’Rourke employee. The programme also includes a series of in-house modules, aimed at exposing you to the latest developments in construction and engineering. Your personal and professional growth will be supported throughout the programme using career planning toolkits and tailored development plans. During the programme you will work across a range of businesses and projects, which will offer the breadth and variety to support your career progression and will contribute towards your professional development.
