Mechanical Apprenticeship

About the scheme

As BAE Systems Land (UK), we are the experts on combat vehicles and munitions used by Armed Forces across the world, extending and developing their capabilities to meet current and future requirements.

The role of a Mechanical Apprentice within BAE Systems Land (UK) includes:-

  • Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance
  • PEO (Performing Engineering Operations)
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering
  • HNC in Mechanical Engineering

What can you expect?

This four year apprenticeship will be split with the first 22 to 30 weeks spent studying full time at a local college until you have achieved your Performance Engineering Operations (PEO) qualification. This is a foundation course specifically tailored as an introduction to manufacturing including how to use workplace equipment in a safe manner.

At the same time you will also be enrolled for a BTEC Level 3 diploma in engineering and attend college on a day release basis for the first two to three years.  Successful apprentices may continue their academic studies through day release into years three and four working towards a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in mechanical engineering.

After completing the PEO requirement you will be introduced to the Company and commence a structured mentoring program designed to focus on the skills required for your future role. Each placement lasts for approximately two to three months in duration. During this time you will start to learn about the structure of the organisation. You will work alongside experienced tradesmen and are given instruction, demonstration, guidance and a hands on opportunity to learn the skills required for your future.

As a Mechanical Apprentice, you will how to service and maintain:

  • Conventional lathes, milling & drilling machines
  • CNC lathes and machining centers
  • Mechanical and hydraulic presses
  • Flow formers
  • Robotics

You will learn how to diagnose faults with the above machines and make effective repairs. This will also include how to read technical and engineering drawings, navigate machine tool maintenance manuals and disassemble and assemble complex machines. You will also learn basic machining techniques such as turning and milling and fabrication techniques such as bending, riveting and welding.

What you’ll need

To apply for an apprenticeship at Washington, you are required to have a minimum of five GCSEs grade A*-C / 9-4, including Maths, English and a Science subject.

In addition, we are looking for individuals who have the motivation and commitment to successfully complete qualifications required which in most cases will take up to four years. Applicants will also be expected to be medically fit as deemed necessary to perform the role, be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance. Your development

Your development will be managed and coordinated by the Site Apprentice Manager and the Early Careers team, with support from our College or training provider. All apprentices will be required to keep a detailed record of their training via the completion of an apprentice log book.
