Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship (Craft)
About the scheme
As an Advanced Apprentice with BAE Systems, you will be working with a team of highly skilled, dedicated employees and fellow apprentices from our Maritime Services business. You’ll be part of a team that maintains, repairs and upgrades ships and maritime equipment for navies around the world as well as maintaining infrastructure and equipment within Portsmouth Naval Base.
You’ll be using hand tools, machines and specialist materials in the Skills Development Centre to learn a variety of functional skills in the context of real life scenarios. This could be fabricating new ship components, installing electrical equipment on a ship’s bridge or maintaining equipment around Portsmouth Naval Base. You will also receive classroom-based training to help support your learning in the workshops and in real working environments.
With the qualifications and experience you will have gained on our Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship, you could become:
- an Electrical Fitter
- a Fabricator
- a Facilities Electrical Fitter
- a Facilities Mechanical Fitter
- a Joiner
- a Mechanical Fitter
- an Outfitter
- a Pipe Worker
- a Welder
All of your work throughout the apprenticeship will be contributing to the maritime services and support we provide to over 50% of the Royal Navy’s surface fleet.
You’ll be earning a salary from day one, gaining real work experience and working towards qualifications at the same time.
What you’ll need
To apply for the Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship you’ll require five GCSEs including English, Maths and a Science subject at grade C / 4 or above. You'll be able to demonstrate a level of hands on practical aptitude and will have good team working and communication skills. Applicants will also be expected to be medically fit as deemed necessary to perform the role, be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance. At the end of four years, you will have obtained the following qualifications: Performing Engineering Operations Level 2, Functional Skills, Employment Rights and Responsibilities, a Technical Certificate and an NVQ Level 3 qualification in your chosen trade. You will have also developed a range of practical skills and gained invaluable work experience.
All of these achievements will set you up for the next part of your journey whether you choose to move onto a higher apprenticeship, go to university or jump straight into a career in your chosen field.
